Philadelphia Union vs Real Madrid Match Thread:

Unfortunately, the game is at 4 am for me, and i have a wedding to attend tomorrow, and i have to leave early in the morning. So the necessary sleep needed for me not to be grumpy all day will had instead. Jordan and Corey will be at the game, hence no Live Blog. Drew, a regular at the blog, will also be there. If you haven’t heard though, this is how the starting 11 is reported to be lining up:

Iker; Arbeloa, Varane, Carvalho, Casado; Xabi, Granero; Jesé, Özil, Callejón; and Benzema.

To update you, Spain U19 went out victorious in their game against Serbia today, with Morata scoring 3 well taken goals. Sarbia assisted 2 goals and played a huge part in another goal. Carvajal started this game, while Alex came on as a half time sub. Our Canteranos have been immense, and as it stands, Morata is the tournaments top scorer with 4 goals. Hope they keep this level up.

  Varane is very promising imo I like him more than Albiol so far by preseason. He rarely makes a mistake. Although he looks slow imo his timing is excellent.

Is it just me or Alonso and Riccy are starting to look their age? (More Carvalho than Alonso)

Also Iker and Varane have saved our asses at least 3 times in the first half an hour alone. Varane looks more like Carvalho than Carvalho is.

        I have no problem people complaining about performances, its the age thing that I don’t get. Tbh I haven’t been watching Carvalho that much this half so he might have not had a great game, but I don’t believe its because of age if he has.

        Well Carvalho is 33, I mean at a certain point he’d start to slow down. However, he doesn’t rely on his pace anyway which is good, but still, he’s probably just not “in” the game right now.

  Yer shame on Jese’s first half. I mean he isn’t like Joselu or Morata who have a legit chance of a first team spot so its not like he’s trying to get Mou’s attention but would have liked to see him on the ball more. From the description I have of him, he seems like skillful dribbler, so would have been good to see him on some runs.

I’m noticing a lot of long passes over the defense this half. It’s worked out pretty well though, especially with the first goal. Callejon seems to be popping up at the right place at the right time!

    Yeah probably. I mean you don’t see much of him during the game but he does seem to just pop up and score. Pedro Leon is the classic winger and he’ll cross cross cross all game which doesn’t really fit our game plan.

the likes of Casado ( who usually likes to make forward runs ) , Jese and Callejon ( who like to take on players ) arent playing like they can , its like they are being shy or something ., i guess thats to be expected since they are new to the team .
the defense was terrible though .

  Well I don’t agree that this was our worst half in the preseason, however I do agree about Alonso and the defense. Not doing well at all, but Iker and Varane are coming up big. Also, Granero seems to be taking on Alonso’s workload as well.

  I wonder what the whole purpose was, it was an absolutely toothless performance and a waste of time! Preseason games are meant to give the team a chance to click with the style for the new season….WTH was that???? at best it was a chance for the youth to play….utterly disappointing.       On a semi-related note, anyone watch this on ESPN3? The commentators were nuts when Farfan scored the goal…they started to compare Farfan to Alessandro Del Piero, and then say that Benzema is going to be “looking to get Farfan’s jersey after the game was over” because the chip was just THAT AMAZING. Huh? I guess it was an okay goal, but Del Piero? Really?

        They said it because Del Piero scored a similar goal against Sporing Lisbon earlier in the day. I thought the commentating was pretty good. Much better than when disinterested British pundits who don’t know much about anything outside the EPL appear on La Liga broadcasts.

Well i’d say stand outs were Iker, Varane, Granero, Callejon and maybe Benzema, didn’t watch him too much so might have to hear other people’s opinion of him first, but he seemed to cover a lot of ground and be on the all a lot. None of the canterano’s really stood out to me though.

A Rather embarrasing match. Both halves were crappy. I’m still keeping my eyes on Jose Callejon; he’s too damn ordinary, and he still seems a bit shy. By that i mean he’s never eager to have the ball. But I’d still give him some time.

It’s still preseason, though, so certain matches are allowed. One thing that bothered me in first half was the fact that we were just happy to keep possession of the ball, and not do much with it. I mean, Carvalho and Varaane had more touches of the ball than.. Callejon, Jesse and the likes. It reminded me of a certain Barcelona. meh, bored me to death.

  Callejon spent most of the game passing the ball backwards , he gets rid of it too quickly at times , its most likely the nervousness getting to him , he is new so he doesnt want to make any mistakes hopefully this changes soon because with the sort of competition in this squad he is not going to see the pitch

In defense of our team, yeah second half was disappointing but I was there and I can tell you it was humid as sh#*. Like sitting in an F-ing sauna!! I’m sure that affected their fitness a bit…..although first half team seemed to handle it better so….. I dunno. My thoughts: Ozil is da man, Kaka was a flop, Varane looked strong, Xabi must’ve taken sedatives on the flight over from SoCal, Benz couldn’t quite get it together, Ronaldo was almost invisible…until he almost scissor-kicked that Union player in the head that is. Great atmosphere, meh game. BTW whoever thought it was a good idea to put 4 major stadiums in the same place should be shot. Traffic was a nightmare in and out.

Bojan has left for Roma. Read somewhere that his scoring rate per minute was better than Messi. Seems from his statements he did not enjoy good relations with Pep. Similar thing happened with Ibra. I guess Pep wants his entire strat worked around Messi. Anyone who presents an alternative to that plan gets fired.
